Everyone knows that the best seats in the house are right up front. The Center for Excellence Science Camps were created for this reason. These week-long
experiences use small hands-on workshops to place the most motivated students on the front line of science. It is considered an amazing opportunity by each 7th or 8th grade student that hopes to be chosen to participate in the program.
Involving the Students
In the first part of each day, participants are introduced to science and math in a manner quite different from that of their regular school classes. The small groups allow the students to be more active and enjoy a hands-on learning experience in every subject. Participants choose from classes such as: “The Wonders of Chemistry,” “Microbiology in the Kitchen,” and “Space and Astrophysics.”
The second part of the day is devoted to a variety of workshops, such as: building musical instruments, sculpture, computer graphics, and puppetry. Enrichment activities during the program include field trips such as visits to the ScienceMuseum in Haifa and high-tech industries in various parts of the country.
Opening our Doors to Everyone
Providing equal opportunity to all eligible individuals is an important goal of all of the Center for Excellence's work. As many of the participants come from Israel's peripheral communities and participation is based solely on merit, the cost of the program is highly subsidized. For most participants this is their first time at an overnight activity outside their home communities. They return home with greater self esteem, pride and confidence in their abilities.
