Even today, in the modern State of Israel, there are still entire immigrant communities that are confronted with numerous obstacles blocking their way to excellence. Parental support for formal education is lacking and most teachers are unfamiliar with their cultural background. Opportunity for Excellence is a program operated by the Center for Excellence in partnership with the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) to assist students among the Ethiopian, Kavkaz, and Bucharian junior high school population.

Giving Them the Push They Need
This situation has taken its toll on many talented Israeli youngsters from immigrant backgrounds. Their academic potential is frequently overlooked; few are offered a chance for advancement that suits their abilities. By offering these youngsters the educational chance they currently lack, Opportunity for Excellence motivates them to overcome the odds, reach their potential, and join the ranks of those advancing Israel's future.
Opportunity for Excellence uses the Center for Excellence’s educational techniques that have been developed for Mitchell Excellence 2000 (E2K). The classes are small; the teaching is highly interactive. In addition to furthering the students’ thinking skills in mathematics and science, the program raises awareness of academic excellence, thus enabling the students to gain self-confidence in their ability to cope with educational and societal challenges.

Teachers with the Training and the Patience
Opportunity for Excellence utilizes local teachers who have been singled out as leaders in their fields. They are required to attend intensive training courses presented by the Center for Excellence in which they learn new methodology and innovative ways of relaying sophisticated subject matter to their pupils. Workshop participants also study the cultural background of the children that they are teaching.
Academic and Social Advancement Make a Life-changing Difference
In addition to the academic opportunities it provides, Opportunity for Excellence gives young immigrants meaningful help by encouraging assimilation of their unique community into Israel's society and future.
